On 22–23 April, an international conference marking the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War and the Second World War was held in Moscow. The event was organised at the initiative of the Institute of World History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, with the participation of scholars from over twenty countries.
The conference was formally opened by Academician Alexander Chubaryan. At the plenary session, Academician Ashot Melkonyan, Director of the NAS RA Institute of History, delivered a speech entitled Armenian Historiography on the History of the Great Patriotic War.
Professor Karen Khachatryan, Deputy Director of the Institute, presented a paper on The Contribution of the Armenian People to Victory in the Great Patriotic War. Varduhi Grigoryan, PhD, Senior Researcher and Head of the Department of Scientific Research and International Relations at the National Archives of Armenia, gave a presentation on the NAA’s publishing activities concerning the war.
On 22 April, A. Melkonyan and Professor R. Karapetyan, as founding members of the “Hayots Tun” (“Armenian Home”) Association, met with approximately one hundred intellectuals based in Moscow.
On 24 April, the final session of the conference dedicated to the new world order was held in the conference hall of the “President” Hotel, under the chairmanship of Academician Alexander Chubaryan, President of the Association of Historical Institutes of the CIS Countries, with the participation of specialists from numerous countries. Professor Viktor Ishchenko addressed the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide in his speech, noting that the parliaments of approximately thirty countries, including the State Duma of the Russian Federation, have recognised and condemned this grave crime. He conveyed condolences to the Armenian delegation on behalf of the conference participants and the Russian public.
Subsequently, the delegation from the NAS RA Institute of History (A. Melkonyan, K. Khachatryan, and R. Karapetyan) participated in the conference dedicated to the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, held in the large hall of the “President” Hotel in Moscow. A number of Armenian and Russian state and public figures residing in Moscow delivered speeches. In his address, Ashot Melkonyan emphasised the importance of the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide, perpetrated in the Ottoman Empire during the First World War, and reflected upon the memory of the genocide in the context of the Armenians’ significant participation in the Great Patriotic War.
