Library











The library functions from the foundation of the Institute of History. There are 11.015 pieces of collected literature. There are not only Armenian (5002) but also 6013 pieces of literature in foreign languages (Russian, English, French, German, Czech, Turkish, Georgian, Arabian etc.). The library receives local and foreign periodicals.

Council of Young Researchers

 




The Council of the Young Researchers joins together up to 35 years old researchers of the Institute of History. The council focuses its attention to the organization of different scientific conferences with participation of young researchers and also to the publication of their articles. The young researchers can publish their scientific articles in the annual collection of Institute of History (“Questions of Armenian History”). There have already been published 9 vloumes of this journal.

Institute ՚ s Administration, Departments and Centres

In 1944 the department of History was divided into two parts (Ancient and Middle Ages). From 1947 there was the department of History of Soviet Socialist Republic of Armenia.
In 1959 was founded the department of History of the USSR and the States of People Democracy. In 1960 in the Institute of Literature of NAS RA was opened the department of History of Armenian Public Mind and Periodicals which in 1965 was moved to the Institute of History. In 1966 the department of Ancient and Middle Ages was extended which was also divided into two parts. In 1977 was founded the department of Armenian-Russian Historical Relations. From 2002 the Institute of History is presented with a new structure. Now there are 7 scientific departments, computer room and the Center of Mesrop Arch. Ashjyan.

The department of Armenian Diaspora and Communities was created in 1959 which was firstly named “Department of History of the USSR and the Republics of People Democracy” and then renamed “Department of Armenian Diaspora and Historical Relations” and finally “Department of Armenian Diaspora and Communities”. Until 1980 the head of the department was V. Voskanyan, then in 1980-1988 V. Barkhudaryan, 1988-2004 V. Miqaelyan. In 2004 the mentioned post was again accepted by acad. V. Barkhudaryan who successfully holds it up to date.
Among well-known researchers of Armenian diaspora and communities are V. Voskanyan, V. Grigoryan (communities of Kazan and Astrakhan), J. Galstyan, V. Martirosyan (Armenian-Russian relations), V. Hakobyan, I. Dashkevich, N. Krivonosov, I. Kripakevich (Armenian-Ukrainian relations), V. Barkhudaryan (history of the Armenian community of Nor Nakhijevan), V. Miqaelyan (the community of Crimea), Q. Avagyan (the community of USA) etc..
There are also many scientific works devoted to the Armenian communities of Hungary (joint work of National Academies of Armenia and Hungary, “About the Armenian-Hungarian Historical Relations” Yerevan, 1983), Romania, Poland, Greece, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon etc.
In 2003 the department’s workers took up to publish Three Volumes of “History of Armenian Diaspora” two of which are already published and the third will be soon.

Department of Armenian Periodicals and Public Mind

Before 1965 the department of Armenian Periodicals and Public Mind was а part of the Institute of Literature of NAS RA. The head of the department was Art. Karinyan. In 1965 it was moved into the institute of History. 1965-1984 the department was managed by A. Mnatsakanyan, 1984-1991 by R. Khachatryan and from 1991 up to date this post holds Doct. A. Kharatyan.
The main subject of the department’s research is the history of periodicals, representatives of the public mind and finally the significance and appreciation of social directions in Armenian reality. The research activities of the department include not only particular periodicals but also various publications concerning the history of public mind. 
With joint efforts of the department workers and some researchers from abroad was published the First volume of “The History of Armenian Periodical Press (1794-1900)”(Cairo, 2005) which includes the history of periodicals from “Azdarar” to the beginning of the 20th Century. The Second volume will be published soon.

In 1977 on the Academician M. Nersisyan’s initiative in the Institute of History was established the department of the Armenian-Russian historical relations. Although based on the ideological and political situation the department did not officially engaged in the problems of the history of the Armenian Issue and the Armenian Genocide, but in these areas were carried out some works as these issues were among scientific interests of M. Nersisyan. M. Nersisyan headed the department until 1999. After the proclamation of the independence of the Republic of Armenia, in 1992 in the Institute were done some structural changes. There were created new thematic research groups. In the department was created a new thematic group "Armenian Issue, the Armenian Genocide and the Great States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries", the head of which was appointed Doctor S. Stepanyan. Then on the basis of this thematic group was created the department of the history of the Armenian Issue and the Armenian Genocide. From 1999 to 2010 the department was headed by Prof. S. Stepanyan. In 2010 Doctor R. Gasparian was appointed in the head of the department. In 2011 Maruqyan Armen was elected as the head of the department. The research workers of the department have published many scientific works concerning various aspects of the Armenian Issue and the Armenian Genocide.
Under the M. Nersisyan’s edition was published the collection of documents and materials "Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Empire” (in 1966, 1982 in Russian, in 1991 in Armenian), which was the first scientific publication of documents concerning the Armenian genocide. Many articles of M. Nersisyan are also devoted to the Armenian Issue and the Armenian Genocide. In the collection of articles and research "Pages from the New History of the Armenian people" are included the rebellion of Zeithun of 1862 and the materials concerning the massacres of the Armenians. 
Academician Hr. Simonyan published monographs and other works – “Ideology and Policy of the Turkish National Bourgeoisie” (Yerevan, 1986, in Armenian), “In the Ways of the Liberation Struggle” (Yerevan, 2009, in Armenian), “From the History of Turkish-Armenian Relations” (Yerevan, 1991, In Armenian).
R. Gasparyan published the following works - “The Armenian of Cilicia in the Early 20th century” (Yerevan, 1999, in Armenian), “The Massacres of the Armenians (in the nineties of 19th to 1921)” (Yerevan, 2005, in Armenian).
Professor S. Stepanyan published the following works – “Armenia in the Policy of Imperialist Germany (end of 19th and the beginning of 20th centuries)”, (Yerevan, 1975, in Russian), “German Sources on the Armenian genocide. Collector, author of the foreword, notes, and editor S. Stepanyan”, (Yerevan, 1991, in Russian), “Armin Wegner and Ernst Werner on the Armenian Genocide”, (Yerevan, 1996, in Armenian), “Iohannes Lepsius and Armenia”, (Yerevan, 1998, in Armenian), “The First Genocide of the 20th century: the Problem of International Recognition, Overcoming of the Consequences of Genocide and Historical Lessons”, (Yerevan, 2005, in Russian), “The Trial of Talaat Pasha”, (Compiler of the book, with a preface and notes by S. Advanced researcher of the Department, Doctor N. Advanced researcher of the Department V. Poghosyan published the following works – “The Massacres of the Armenians in Cilicia in 1909 by the Assessment of French Historical Scholarship”, (Yerevan, 2009, in Armenian), “Les massacres des arméniens de Marache en 1920” (Yerevan, 2010).
Senior researcher of the Department L. Honvhannisyan published the monograph “The Armenian Issue and the Great States in 1914-1917”, (Yerevan, 2002, in Armenian).
Senior researcher of the Department B. Poghosyan published the following works – “Pro-Armenian Movement in the United Kingdom by Documents (1918-1923)”, (Yerevan, 2002, in Armenian), “The Activities of the Committee Britain-Armenia (1913-1924)”, (Yerevan, 2003, in Armenian), “Pro-Armenian Movement in the United Kingdom by Documents (1914-1923)”, (Yerevan, 2005, in Armenian), “Turkish - American Relations and the Issue of USA Recognition of the Armenian Genocide in 1991-2007”, (Yerevan, 2011, in Armenian).
Senior researcher of the Department H. Boyajyan published the monograph “Poghos Nubar Pasha and the Problem of Reforms in Western Armenia in 1912-1914”, (Yerevan, 2010, in Armenian).
The primary task of the department is making of cadres. The department is also involved in the preparation of volumes III and IV of the multivolume history of Armenia.

The department of Ancient History was created in 1943 and joint with the section of Middle Ages it became one of the most important parts of the institute. The first head of the department was prominent scientist, Academician Suren Eremyan. The subject of the department’s research was many-sided such as ancient culture, political and social-economic relations, cartography, source study etc. As a result of the division in 1963 the department of Ancient History became a separate part of the institute. Acad. G. Sargsyan was the first head of this department. His main works refer to the social-economic relations and also different researches devoted to an Armenian historian of the 5th century Movses Khorenatsy. In 1971 S. Eremyan was reelected in the post of the head. Then the head of the department was S. Krkiasharyan who is the author of a rich collection of scientific researches. Some of the results of S. Krkiasharyan’s productive scientific activity are the translations from old Greek the works of Herodotus, Xenophon and Plutarch. In 2010 Edward Danielyan was elected as the head of the department.
The researchers of this department have published numerous works some of which refer to the following issues of the Armenian history: Studies on the terms in the Armenian literary monuments (S. Kostanyan), the history of the Armenian Kingdom of Van (M. Israyelyan, H. Gharaghyozyan), the history of the Armenian cosmological mind in the 7th century (E. Danelyan), Armenian-Assyrian historical relation in the 3-5th centuries (H. Melkonyan), Armenian-Selevkian relations (Zh. Elchibekyan), Armenia in the times of the King of Tigran the Great (R. Manaseryan), the Hittite records and the Armenian kingdom of Van (V. Khachatryan), pre-Christian cult worships in Armenia (G. Vardumyan), Armenian Kingdom of Kommaghene (E. Margaryan) etc.

System of M.A. and Ph.D.

For the integration of education and different branches of science the International-Scientific Center of NAS RA (ISEC) organized courses for Master’s degree which aims to make qualified cadres for post-graduate studentship.
In 2005 within the system of ISEC was opened the department of "History" and in 2009 the department of "Foreign Affairs". The head of the department of "History and Foreign Affairs" is deputy director of the Institute of History of NAS RA, Candidate of History, associate professor K. Khachatryan. А group of high qualified scientists such as V. Barkhudaryan, S. Krkiasharyan, A. Melqonyan, N. Sarukhanyan, V. Vardanyan, St. Stepanyan, G. Khudinyan,. V. Ter-Ghevondyan are involved in the teaching staff . The selected students of the department will be able to continue their education in the post-graduate studentship of the Institute of History of NAS RA.

Institute of History of NAS RA is a member of the International Association of the Institutes of History of the countries of CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States). Association was founded in Moscow in December of 2005. The president of the Association is the director of the Institute of Universal History of NAS of Russian Federation (NAS RF), honorary member of NAS RF, academician Aleksander Chubaryan.

The department of Medieval History was created in 1943. The first head of the department was prominent scientist аcademician Suren Eremyan. First achievements were the researches connected with 7th century’s geographical and historical important source “Ashkharacouyc” and restoration of the map of Armenia of the same period. On the basis of Arabian, Byzantine and Sеljuк sources were studied different issues of the Armenian history in these corresponding periods (A.Ter-Ghevondyan, H. Bartikyan, S. Bornazyan).
Studies on the history of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia are another important field of the department’s research (G. Miqayelyan, S. Bornazyan). The political and social-economic history of Armenia in the 13-14th centuries was thoroughly studied by L. Babayan. With new rich materials and documents were revealed some important questions of the liberating movements in Western Armenia in the 17th century (H. Anasyan). Using European and Eastern sources M. Zulalyan studied the social-economic condition of the Armenian people in the 13-18th centuries. There are many publication of some collections of sources such as the volumes of “Minor Chronicles” (V. Hakobyan), “Litarary Monuments of Armenian Manuscripts” (L. Khachikyan, V. Hakobyan, A. Hovhannisyan). The researchers of the department enriched the volumes of “Foregin Sources about Armenia and Armenians” which include new series of Arabian and Byzantine sources. Acad. H. Bartikyan published five volumes which basically refer to the Armenian-Byzantine relations. In 2010 candidate of history Artashes Shahnazaryan was elected as the head of the department.

The Department of New Ages was created in 1944 when the section of History was divided into two parts. The heads of the department were famous scientists such as V. Rshtuni (1944-1948), V. Parsamyan (1948-1955), Ts. Aghayan (1955-1961, 1972-1980), A. Hovhannisyan (1961-1972), Az. Hambaryan (1980-2003). 2003-2011 the head of the department was Doct. E. Kostandyan. From 2011 the department is headed by R. Sahakyan.
The main subjects of the department՚s scientific research are the history and ideology of the national-liberating movements in Eastern and Western parts of Armenia (Ash. Hovhannisyan, Ab. Hovhannisyan, Ts. Aghayan, R. Hovhannisyan, E. Kostandyan), the social-economic and agrarian relations (Az. Hambaryan), Armenian-Russian relations (M. Nersisyan, Ash. Hovhannisyan, Z. Grigoryan, V. Parsamyan), the emergence of the Armenian Cause, ethnography (Ash. Melqonyan, G. Araqelyan, A. Sahakyan), the history of Armenian parties (G. Khudinyan, A. Karapetyan, G. Hovhannisyan, S. Sargsyan) etc.

The department was founded in 1947. The heads of the department were many prominent scientists such as M. Nersisyan (1947-1948), Ts. Aghayan (1948-1951), A. Hakobyan (1951-1980). From 1980 up to 2010 the post was held by Doct. V. Ghazakhetsyan. In 2010 Hamlet Harutyunyan was elected as the head of the department.
Directions of the department’s activity are many issues of the modern history of the Armenian people particularly the First Republic of Armenia (1918-1920) and Soviet period.
The researchers of this department have published numerous works some of which refer to the following issues _ The Soviet period (H. Elchibekyan, Ts. Aghayan, G. Galoyan), the rebellion in May of 1920 (G. Galoyan, Hovh. Karapetyan), the Armenian parliament in 1918-1920 (H. Avetisyan, A. Hakobyan), the treaty of Sevr (Hamb. Karapetyan), agrarian relations (V. Ghazakhetsyan, G. Geghamyan, S. Alahverdyan, E. Gevorgyan), the policy of England with Armenia (G. Makhmourian), the participation of the Armenians in the Second World War (A. Mnatsakanyan, E. Khaleyan, M. Sahakyan, K. Harutyunyan), liberating struggle of G. Nzdeh in Zangezur (V. Ghazaketsyan), national struggle for the independence of Artsakh (H. Harutyunyan, R.
